Via in Rose Estate:
nature and landscape

For its position, “Via in Rose” estate enjoys a large landscape setting. Situated on a slope overlooking the valley of the Crati River, it offers views ranging from the Sila Mountains to the Pollino Mountains. The morphology of the places is varied with planes, hills, slopes, valleys and hidden corners. Walking along the paths you will come across majestic specimens of oak trees and deciduous groves. The wildlife present or passing through is very diverse. You can come across foxes, wild boars, porcupines and roe deer and also spot buzzards and kites flying over the area. The surrounding environment is still wild and landscaped, as described by the naturalist from San Pietro in Guarano (Cosenza) Orlando Marsico in the Forum Acta Plantarum “To the east of Cosenza, on the western slopes of the Silano Plateau, the so-called Presila of Cosenza stretches out. A land that is rich in flora and fauna, just a stone’s throw away from the city but still quite uncontaminated. An area where the most diverse environments coexist in a relatively narrow space: from the typical species of Mediterranean scrub, oak, chestnut, pine forests and deep beech trees. A true naturalistic paradise. The area consists of the basin of the Arenti River, a right bank of the Crati River, then the Crati Valley bordered by the Tyrrhenian Coastline. Looking around, it is a succession of hills separated by torrents of pristine and sparkling waters with the shores covered by the vegetation of the typical Mediterranean scrub. Following the profile of the oak, chestnut, artificial pinewoods, higher beech trees and clearings, in spring they are covered in crocuses, violets and orchids. In such little space there are many environments. In the north-east the Greenhouse of the Three Fountains, once crossed by one of the few mule accesses to the Silano Plateau So, going up the Long River, the main branch of the Arente, nature seems to make whims, hollyhocks, broomsticks and tree-like horns so high. Alders along the course of the winding and almost flat river, brooms on the left side and holly trees on the right, over the ridge of the Silano Plateau, with ancient chestnut trees acting as sentinels.”

“Beauty” for agricultural enhancement.
Hortus Gymnasium, given the high value of the landscape of this estate, in order to make its business model more complete, by integrating it with an attractive range of services, has chosen to invest in “beauty”, trying to add more elements of value to those already present. In this perspective, five thematic gardens have been designed (link foto orti tematici) to accommodate the collections of productive plants (fruit-bearing, vegetable and aromatic) native or naturalized in Calabria. Each garden is surrounded by a pathway and in addition to having the specific function of a walkway, it also carries out the separation of the interior area destined exclusively to a “garden/orchard catalog”, as well as from an outside bend planted with a mixed plant border of shrubs and herbaceous perennials, typical of the Calabrian flora.
