Hortus Gymnasium company has set goals and started activities aimed at maximizing energy efficiency and minimizing environmental impact

  • In 2008, the company owning the property, allowed for the installation of a photovoltaic plant on the slopes of the roofs of existing buildings. To use first af all the energy from this photovoltaic plant, all planned purchases of farm equipment are therefore exclusively electric battery-powered machines, tested or experimental.
  • In 2016, to cover the need for conservation, initially the biomass obtained by cutting and pruning plantations of medicinal shrubs for processing and, subsequently, to preserve oil and wine derived from the transformation of olives and grapes from the farm and purchased, a natural-insulated cell was built consisting of a vaulted warehouse, with thermostats, for agricultural products, with a surface area of 77 square meters. The construction of the semi-basement storage facility was an advanced experiment on the reduction of energy impact in the preservation of agricultural and food products, completely vaulted with bricks, without the use of reinforced concrete (to avoid the radiation effects of the Faraday Cage represented by the reinforcement of concrete buildings). The temperature inside the room is naturally mitigated by the ground layer covering most of the surfaces.

Hortus Gymnasium has decided to invest consistently in energy production and aims to be completely dependent on its own consumption, unwilling to adopt energy from any non-renewable source. For this reason, all the equipment, which in some cases is completely innovative, has been chosen from the types that use electric power supply to eliminate the consumption of fossil fuels and atmospheric and acoustic pollution.

  • The Polaris Ranger Electric, a UTV (Utility Task Vehicle) off-road vehicle, has been selected as a means of transport for the company, and the company’s work vehicle is a prototype of an electric battery-powered motocultivator.
  • Electric equipment for all agricultural machineries has been acquired: a professional battery-powered blower, a professional battery-powered electric cutter, a professional battery-powered electric chainsaw, a battery-powered olive harvester or other mechanical tools for harvesting, lithium-ion battery packs 36V- 26-1Ah – 940W with backpack harness, a charger.
